Gemaga interviews Nomura on new Kingdom Hearts games
As usual, Nomura is doing the rounds with the Japanese press – well-known monthly mag Gemaga was next up on his ‘to-do’ list, and he reveals a few new pieces of info here, as summarised by IGN.
Rather than copy a transcript here, I’ll just summarise any important info that we don’t know yet – also note that currently, no scans go with this because apparently, none of the pictures are new.
358/2 Days
The main thing Nomura adressed with the two main upcoming titles is where the Disney characters will fit in – on the topic of 358/2 Days, Nomura points out that the Disney characters will have to be introduced to the plot in a different way. In the previous games, Sora would go on an epic journey, meeting new Final Fantasy and Disney-based friends and foes along the way. With this title though, Roxas is centered in Twilight Town, and isn’t actually going on a physical journey – he is simply completing missions for the Organization, but going on a spirutual journey of his heart along the way. This, coupled with the fact that Roxas is quite a loner by heart (his only friend being Axel during this game), means that the Disney characters will probably have to meet him accidentally, instead of him meeting them.
Talking of multiplayer, he didn’t reveal much new info, except the fact that players can’t be the same member during any given round – so in other words, if your friend choses Axel before you, you can’t choose him for that round: better luck next time! He also points out a new feature in which the bottom screen on the DS will be used as a universal chat-board as such during the missions. During multi-player gameplay, all users will share the same bottom-screen, so if one writes a message there, or scribbles a picture, all other players will see it and can alter it at will.
Speaking of what missions will include, he points out that the multiplayer missions will vary from defeating certain monsters, battling each other, or going to recover some kind of item. The single-player and multi-player will only have minimal connections – players level-up their characters in single-player, and they can then use these upgraded personas in multi-player.
Birth by Sleep
Birth by Sleep was very interesting – Nomura points out that the main theme of the story will be answering the question, “Who are you, Ven!?” So although the mysteries of Master Xehanort, and the connections these characters have with our old trio of heroes are still a major factor to the story, the question of Ven’s true identity is the story’s main driving force.
With the Disney characters, Nomura mentions that they are making sure all the Disney worlds are set ten years before as well – he mentions a young Hercules at the Coliseum, for example. They want to make sure that every aspect of the game, and the universe it occupies is all affected by the same timeline, so that a real sense of character and a moving world are present.
With gameplay, it seems the card shuffling system is back – it’s apparently an ‘evolved’ version of Chain of Memories system, and the cards (or a similar system) are being used. Also note that in this recent scan we showed you, the lowest picture in the blue section actually features Terra fighting the new enemies in the game! Not Heartless, nor Nobodies!
Coded
Not much to speak of here. He mentions that, like Agito XIII, the team is actually making the game with mobile technology in mind that doesn’t currently exist yet, but that with Coded they are holding back a little on the tech side so they can release it outside Japan. He also points out that the game will use a new feature on mobiles, that asks the player to swivel the phone around so it can be played in wide-screen.
He also states that, (in Japan at least), they’ll be using a new marketing program in how they release the game. Because so many free mobile games are being released now in Japan, Square have a new, un-used way of releasing the title in mind. No idea what this means yet (free after redeeming Square Points or something?), but we’ll update you when we know.
Lastly, in the realm of the next major title, Nomura once again re-instates that this title “connects to a story that is to come. Players will be able to foresee things through these three games.” So yes, these will eventually link to Kingdom Hearts III (or whatever they decide to call it).

What the princess’ of heart? Think any of their worlds would be used. I know that used, belle, Jasmine and Alice. What about the princess’ worlds they didn’t use like Cinderella, Snow White or Aurora?
Cinderella’s castle was shown in one of the screenshots. One thing is for certain though. Those creatures attacking Ven are in now way heartless or nobodies.
It weird, they look like a mix, they have the darkness-esqu type of a heartless, but looks to me they have limberness of the nobodies.

The castle that was pictured wasn’t actually Cinderella’s castle, it was Sleeping Beauty’s.
But yeah, all the Disney princesses can be featured, most of them in their mid-late teens I’d say. Aladdin would be a kid, and will probably meet his monkey for the first time, looking upon a young princess Jasmine high in her castle, wishing to meet her…
If they follow KH2′s brilliant cut-scene management, this game has the ability to be really heart-warming! :D

TO comment on what golden said, like seeing aladdin as a kid…wouldnt there be problems with that? Like, wouldnt that be forcing a storyline into the Disney named title? I know they do that anyways with adding in the heartless, but its added in to the already existing story, like in kh2, the story in agrabah followed the return of jafar a bit.
But if they go to agrabah in the past, and hes a kid, square is making a storyline not originally made by Disney. Am i right or perhaps just thinking too much into it?
For memory they can actually use the characters for whatever storyline they want, as long as Disney approves it.
Although it hasn’t been done in such a large way before, look back to KH1 for example. Hewey, Dewey and Lewey all ran a store in a place called ‘Traverse Town’ and sold FF-related items basically. Not too much like their original story! :D
So yeah, with the main stream games until now they’ve basically followed the film’s story with Disney worlds (except maybe Hercules… I don’t remember Cloud, Sephiroth and Auron appearing in that movie), but seeing as this is just a spin-off they can probably get away with a lot of innovative things! :D
hmmmm, so if we think about it, Square can do anything they want with the disney charecters (with disney consent of course) So that means pretty much edless possibilities.

also, i was reading about the organization members the other day and i was pondering who my party members would be if i chose 4 from the org in 358/2 days. First would definietly be Saix of course, then followed by axel, followed then by Marluxia or Lexaues, but who would the 4th be and why? ive been tihnking for hours now and cant come up with anything, what do we tihnk?

The thing is org, unless we went video searching on yourtube, most of us doesnt know how he actually fights as far as zexion goes. The thing is i think Roxas will be apart of your party no matter what, so i think thats gonna affect some things
well ive seen how zexion fights, i saw the final mix videos, i read some bios, ect. so im pretty sure im ok on his fighting status, i still am not impressed, and i hope not, i dont like roxas either. everoyne makes too big of a deal about him, so it turns me off.

Lex-ay-us is the English pronunciation. Not as complex as Saix, which is usually spelt with the two dots above the ‘i’ and is pronounced ‘Sigh-ex’.

One thing I can tell you though: the release order.
358/2 Days is coming out first, around this time next year. They want Coded out by Christmas but its apparently very hard to estimate when that will release because they need to wait until all Japanese phones are up to its level of technology.
Birth by Sleep will be releasing in 2009, and the word is that when it is released, Kingdom Hearts III will be announced.
My party would be… Saix, Leaxeus, Marluxia and Roxas. But Ive might switch one against Xigbar.

Cuz the future KH games might get more related with the past. I think Ive heard that Nomura first needed to tell BBS before KH3 because it had an important meaning or something.

That something that im just gonna have to disagree with you lina, i dont think the ps3 is gonna be outdatesd by that time, lets give a little history lesson if you can stand it.
The ps1 originally came out almost 13 years ago, back in 94. That system stayed strong in itself till its predessor, the ps2 came out, in mid of 2000, roughly six years later. And, what do you know, a little bit over 6 years later, the ps3 was released late 2006 in november, so almost 2007.
If we use the same sort of thinking, then the ps4 or something long those lines, wont be released untill at least 2012 at the absolute earliest if were lucky, at at the very late end, 2014, and by that time, if kh3 hasnt come out yet, then there is gonna be problems
hmmm ok, well then ill meet you halfway and give the Kh date history. that was togther we can math the systems to the games.
The When kh1 came out it was in 2002. And was followed by COM in late 2004. Followed by KH2 in 2006. Now we are going to see the next game in 2008, so that means were pretty much following a two year timeline aside from that of BBS. The majority of games being two years apart. so we can use that as our average and assume that if BBS is coming out late 2009. that Kh3 following the same similar pattern will not be out till 2011 at the earliest. now if this game is more advanced which we can pretty much guarentee, then it more than likely will not be out until 2012.
So theres a good chance that it will be fore the ps3, but theres a good change it could be on the ps4 if its out by that time. So i redraw my origonal statement and i now will say that it will prolly be for the ps3, but could very well be for the ps4 as well.

The times seem right to me, no doubt about it, but something doesnt seem right to me. I remember the face that it took so long for kh2 to come out, was becuase he had multiple titles that he was working on, Advent children, final fantasy 12, along with other titles im sure he helped on, but not headlined. With his last Final Fantasy title he is working on being 13, and that game is soon to be out of his hands, he wont have any other things to worry about except his own projects, thats unless something else comes up.
If BBS doesnt hit shelves till at least mid to late 09, if everything goes smooth and no other titles comes up, he can get final things done on kh2 quicker than usual. Remember that japan got kh2 a good 3 months before the US did. So if my estimates and thinking is correct, i would expect an early 2011 release, late 2010 if he pushes it, so im thinking a 2011 date, between january and june sounds like a good estimate to me
Hhhhmmm, i agree touche. So if were talking on that note, you have to assume that square will make more games tahn just kingdom hearts, The FF series may not be continued farther involving the Kh team, but square in general might have new games and other games in other series coming out. They may not invlove the KH team, but that factor could put a damper on an early 2011 release.
Well i already know of one game, The Last Remnant, and nomura and his team isnt apart of that.
Now if Nomura has his own team, then him and his own team can work on this, while square’s people do what they do, they an early release for ’11 is possible. Even with future games coming out, Nomura himself will have a focus, and one person working on it helps out alot instead of no one. 2011, mid or so is my final answer, and if soemthing crazy happens, then perhaps late ’11, earl ’12 release
in the end, we wont know beucae of the massive time lapse, anything could happen between now and 2011. so we can only make an educated guess, and right now its looking like 2011 or 2012.
I really like this debate. The ps3 is the next gen console and its a really large upgraded version from the ps2. Maybe its strong enougt to stay in the market for about 8 years.
Nomura said that in the future he wont concentrate at FF so that maybe means he only focuse on KH. But still theres 3 games that will come out in 2 years. There might be some delays. But BBS should be devoleped by another team I think. So maybe Nomura starts working on KH3 after 358/2 days.
Okeydoke, I’ll sort all of this out here.
Nomura’s correct statement is that “Final Fantasy Versus XIII” will be his last Final Fantasy title as director.
For those keeping track, this is only his second FF as director, with Advent Children preceeding it.
So he’ll still probably end up being involved with character designs on a lot of other upcoming FF games, but he’ll never headline it.
Next up, KH spin-offs. Chain of Memories was never a major thing for him – he was involved with the story and designed the characters, but most of the story was handled by Kazu and Daisuke Watanabe, so still not much of a problem.
The new titles though, will create a lot of problems – not only is he directing THREE other teams on these individual games, he also has to direct the KH1/KH2 team with FFV13. All of these projects will definitely push KH3 back considerably – 2011 is the earliest I would consider here.
As for the PS3′s lifespan, its far too early to tell. The PSone had a relatively weak start, as did the PS2, but at the time of their launches game media wasn’t as wide-spread so it wasn’t really publicised or critiqued. With the PS3 though, the whole world is looking, and every idiot and Microsoft fan in a hundred miles will look at a poor launch and declare it a failure.
Trust me, the console will last at least half a decade, but as for when it will end, and as for whether this will effect KH3, none of us can really tell for another couple of years until not only has the PS3 settled in, but Nomura and the KH series’ new-found fame.

Yeah, everyone says it was a huge failure, but it really wasnt, they say it was just cause of the price tag. But golden, the ps2 wasnt actually a failure, at launch, the ps2 sold the same amount of systems in half the time of the ps1.
ANyways, at least this clears up alot wiht people saying that it is possible for kh3 to be coming out in a year or two. Its an answer that im happy to hear, not the answer that i wanted to hear, but at least its an answer

Im afraid that KH3 will come out 2012 if were really unlucky the beginning2013. With all these things that Nomura will direct at leats one of the games will be delayed.But I hope for a release 2011.
The price for the ps3 alreayd dropped, the 20 gig is out, and the 60 gig is now like 500 dollars. They consider it a failure cause of the high price, and the lack of launch games. But if i remember mysefl saying this a long long time ago, back in like june, the ps3 did better than the 360. I read in game informer that during the 1st 6 months of its release, the ps3 sold about 100,000 more units that the 360 in its first 6 months, so i dont get it either
well despite its pricetag the ps3 actually did really well. It sold more units at a higher price obviously making it a better seller. Like reza said the thing with the ps3 that most people generate with faliure is the current games out on it. they dont have a wide variety of games that appeal to all ages and the games that are out, most of them are series that are just getting going. Theres no like Zelda (i know its nintendo, just making and example) for the ps3 which people would buy because of preceding games. Theres sonic, and ninja gadien, and Gundam, but thats it for actual like Rpgs that have predecesors in a series. ( i dont care about other ones im just making a point) this dissapointed alot of people, thus the ps3 could in turn be considered a faliure.
2011 huh for KH3. It wouldn’t surprise me if we start to see rumors of next gen consoles then.
The PS3 is a good system but like it was already said, there are not many games out for it. My friend has one but is currently using it just to watch movies. He only has 3 games for. I hope it does not turn out to be a failure like Luna suggests because of the game selection. The PS2 has a lot of potential.
Where have you been lately, Tidus? It’s been a while. They could have done so much more with the PS2 though. i only purchased a PS3 because my PS2 couldn’t play most of my games anymore. Keep in mind that this system of mine is around 4 or 5 years old now.
my ps2 is origonal, from the day it came out, and it still works fine. i have a ps3 tho, and im actually very happy with it, i hve like 8 games and im pleased i bought it.

Sory it has been a while. I am a grad student and I have my Masters comps coming up here in a couple of weeks. I have been studying real hard.
I have an original PS2 as well. I got that mod for it with the network adapter and hard drive where you can copy games to the hard drive. I also have a GC and 360. I am happy with my set up.
I don’t think I will be buying a PS3 any time soon cause that is $400 that I need for school and books.
….2011….I’ll be about 18 by then. I’m not sure If I’ll still be into KH when I’m 18. Hehe I probably will…

Hmm… I think I forgot one thing in my equation. With this in mind, I can safely say 2010 will be the more likely date, but 2011 is still a possibility.
OK, here we go – KH3, assuming its a PS3 title, will use the FFVersus13 engine. The engine’s already entirely set up, so all they have to do is textures, events and voice-acting. Add a few little alterations here and there, and the game will be pretty much done.
Add this with the fact that Square seems to want to churn out KH games at the speed of light as they do with FF, and I’d say 2010 is the more likely of the two.

Hmm, Reza, I’m pretty sure your stats are right with the PS2, but only for America and Japan in particular – Europe I remember wasn’t too fond of it, and I specifically remember the huge uproar it caused down here in Aus on release – pretty much everyone hated it ’cause it was 700AUD and there were no games with any real substance.
2001 though, Final Fantasy X and (the higher seller of the two here by 2:1), Metal Gear Solid 2 were released, and the console suddenly took off with a bang.
Hmmm… I think I’ve got a few other ideas but I’ll save those for tomorrow, I’m too tired now! :D

Well i havent a ps3 yet but I have my ps2 and im really happy with it. But im saving for a ps3 but im not really old enough for most of the summerjobs. but i have played the ps3 and I loved every second of it.
If you count my friends favorite it would be a 50/50. Half of them like the ps and half of them x-box

the ps3 is actually a great system, alot of people think its overpriced, and no that many good games, but they games they do have, are actually pretty good.
Hahahahaha…ha. I know that everyone loves the X-Box 360 and the PS2, and I’ll admit, they both have great games. Kameo is a great 360 title. But never the less, I am a consummate gamecube fan. I mean, it has so many great games! As for me, I will wait for the PS3 for when KH3 comes out.

I just got heavenly sword, its not that fantastic. The storyline is pretty cheesy, i mean theres nothing that fantastic, the combos and fighting are good, but the missions are frusterating, and it really takes away from the game.
Well, Heavonly sword and assasin’s creed is what got me interested, besides it being the ps3. But even though you say that sword isnt real fantastic, im still gonna get, something i have to see for myself

The wii is good, but ours is on the mantle above the fireplace, so playing gamecube games on it always risks pulling the controller too far….who knew that wiis were so hardy?

oh no, heavnly sword, i know was a so-so game in itself, and that game alone would never make me by the game by itself. Its a combonation of whats here right now, Resistance, assasin’s creed, and games that are soon to come like army of two and area 51. Then theres the games that spotlights it for me, Final Fantasy xiii and kh, that sells it on my side.

I’m actually really happy, I got past the light cycle games on pround mode for KH2, finished another chapter of my book at 1 am last night, and won my soccer game 4-0.
Plus a question just occured to me: if Roxas is Sora’s nobody, who was created when Sora lost his heart, then why doesn’t Riku have a nobody? Or does getting possesed by Xehanort’s heartless not count? Sorry if this has been gone over before.
What do you mean who was created? When sora lost his heart, roxas was created, you talking about the heartless that was created? Sora was also the heartless, not sure exactly what your saying here.
As far as riku goes, i have a theory that no one else is getting on board with me. I think Riku did lose his heart when ansem possessed him, i also think that he does have a nobody, but no one agrees. I think its Axel…
hhhhhmmmmmm, actually reza, i think no one agrees becuase youve never said that before. Ive read all of your posts for almost a year now and i dont ever remeber you saying rikus heartless was axel. Thats actually a great theory, that would explain the natural connection and the tie between best friends or axel and roxas. The only thing that troubbles me, is that shouldent rikus nobody be a similar age to roxas like roxas is to sora? Axel seems much older than roxas. Also, in the FM+ vid with Xig and Zex they were already at #11 in recruits, and that was way BEFORE Com, of course, because they were just barely planin’ on movin in there, so with Axel being #8, right? The time wouldn’t match up.

See, the whole Axel being Riku’s nobody is only a long shot theory, and the only evidence i have to back it up is that Roxas and Axel gets along so well, other than, its just a theory, but it would be a good plot filler for some gaps
well yeah. i mean theres not alot of information to base if off, but the thing is, no one has any better ideas with more supporting evidence than you do. so its as good a theory as any. Plus, the game seemed to make axel and roxas’ frindship such a big deal, so it could mean something.

Cause he lost his body, and his heart was cast aside, so he never really technically lost his heart, but if his heart was casted aside, it was in the end, not in control of his body, so maybe that is another way a nobody is born specially.
Well what happened with riku, is that his heart was overcome, not cast aside. he allowed the darkness to take him over, so that he could get more power. but what happened is he sucame his heart to the darkness, and that gave Xehnaorts heartless a springboard to overthrow rikus weakend heart, and it was weakend from using the darkness in excession.
thinking about that, he never actually lost his heart, so riku was never made into a full heartless, maybe riku never produced a nobody, because his heart and his body were never seperated, his heart was just lost in the darkness inside riku.
Or, maybe because his heart was never really separated, yey never really all there, it created a new being, different than any we’ve seen. That could be the new enemy-type, made from people whose hearts are consumed by darkness, yet don’t exactly lose their hearts, or become heartless or nobody.

the only problem is that seems kinda…i dunno, anticlimactial if you ask me. i dont know why, but having two possibilietes for differant enemies born of the same nature, i dunno, just doesnt strike me as kingdom hearts. IM not shooting it down, just saying i think its…lets say fishy.
Yeah, something doesn’t seem quite right. It’s something that is definitely worth thinking about. I can see one new enemy but TWO? I’m not even sure that’s possible.
well we do have a new enemy, actually possibly 2 new enemies. The enemys in BBS and coded, could be the same, and could be different.
As far as Riku and axel goes, until Nomura actually says, nope not connected, i will believe what i think. Although my only basis is the real tightness with Axel and Roxas, but its good enough for me

It just doesnt seem like something needed to make kingdom hearts better, it seams like a) if there was multuiple similar ways to make a similar enemie involving the heart and body then people would get confused (lets face it, some ofthe people playing these games arent geniouses) or b) it would get to complicated to follow, and the game would be to technical, and loose its feel.
well aparantly theres multiple ways of obtaining and weilding a keyblad as well, so, to me theres not much of a difference

But I’m with Tirition, about the old enemies in the past, BBS. I think that the process of creating those enemies was somehow destroyed, and Riku would be the best candidate to have one of those old “others” or whatever ya call em.

twilight town wasnt created by sora. Its a town like any other, and the false one that we found roxas in was created by DIZ. no sora in that equasion.
I thought that it was created by the other side of Sora’s heart in CoM. They refer to it as such several times in KH2. I think.

Eagl is right, that symbol could stand for Anti mode. don’t think that’s the right word, but it’s only ever happened to me once, when I was fighting Saix, and I got creamed.
